    Responsibilities

    Reporting to CJI’s project lead and in consultation with colleagues across CJI and its partners, the position will:


    • Provide intensive assistance to states engaged in the Justice Reinvestment Initiative and other similar initiatives, including high-quality data analysis, development of evidence-based policy options, policy maker and stakeholder outreach of proposed policies and practices and the implementation of approved policy reforms.
    • Facilitate working group and task force meetings with state leaders from the judicial, executive and legislative branches, and ensure input from relevant stakeholders.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of legislative and communications strategies.
    • Assist in drafting legislation, amendments and legislative talking points.
    • Lobby the legislature and governor for passage of the agreed-upon legislation.
    • Conduct policy analysis, assess organizational practices, and interpret public safety data to inform policy recommendations.
    • Assist policy makers and practitioners as they implement changes triggered by legislation or administrative rule.
    • Help conduct state and/or system assessments .
    • Maintain and continue to develop an understanding of emerging criminal and juvenile justice issues by monitoring publications and participating in conferences, seminars and other professional development activities.
    • Represent CJI at conferences, meetings, and other events, including preparing materials for distribution and making presentations.

    Qualifications

    • Masters or other advanced degree in a relevant area or equivalent experience preferred.
    • At least five years’ experience in the public policy arena, or practical experience in pretrial supervision, law, corrections, juvenile justice, community corrections, or related field.
    • Experience working with policy makers, corrections officials, the judiciary, researchers, and other key stakeholders in the criminal or juvenile justice field.
    • Demonstrated time and project-management skills, including the ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Ability to think strategically and creatively, adjust to changing circumstances, organize time, remain attentive to details and identify resources for projects.
    • Ability to develop and move complex projects forward with a high degree of independence within a creative, fast-paced, action oriented, and collegial environment.
    • Ability to work in a virtual office environment with remote project teams across multiple work sites.
    • Experience convening groups of policy makers, researchers, and other professional groups and supporting their efforts to move toward desired outcomes.
    • Willing to travel extensively.
